Brendan Barber
The Trade Union Congress comprises 58 affiliated unions
representing nearly seven million working people. The TUC exists to
campaign for a fair deal at work and for social justice at home and
abroad.
General Secretary
After university, Brendan took a sabbatical year as President of
the City University Students Union where, among other things, he
was involved in negotiations with the Greater London Council to
acquire cheap housing for students near the university campus.
This proved a strong foundation for joining the TUC as a policy
officer in 1975 dealing with training issues and in 1976 he was
promoted to the post of assistant secretary in the Organisation and
Industrial Relations Department.
In April 1979 Brendan became head of the TUC Press and
Information Department. He became head of the TUC's organisation
department in 1987 and deputy General Secretary in
1993. He was elected General Secretary in 2003.
