Lesley Longstone
Director General of Young People, Department for
Education (until December 2010)
Lesley joined the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) in
August 2001. Initially she was responsible for the Specialist
Schools policy and for Academies. After a brief period as
Director for Secondary Education, she became Bill Manager for the
2004 Higher Education Bill, followed by Director with
responsibility for international work across DfES.
In 2006 she moved to a post with responsibility for the Education
and Inspections Bill and for choice, diversity and fair access in
the schools sector. On the creation of the new Department for
Children, Schools and Families, she became Director General of the
new Young People Directorate which is responsible for ensuring that
all young people make the most of their talents and are able to
succeed in life.
Lesley resigned from the Taskfocre Trustees in December
2010 to take up a new role as Director General
of Infrastrcutre and Funding at the Department for
Education.
