Sir William Castell LVO
The Wellcome Trust is an independent charity funding research to
improve human and animal health. Established in 1936 under
the will of Sir Henry Wellcome, it is the UK's largest
non-governmental source of funds for biomedical research.

Prior to taking up this appointment Sir William was President
and Chief Executive Office of GE Healthcare, the global medical
diagnostics and biosciences business of the General Electric
Company, of which he was also a Vice Chairman. Sir William remains
a Director of the General Electric Company and is a non-executive
Director of BP plc. Prior to its acquisition by GE in 2004, Sir
William was Chief Executive of Amersham plc for 15 years. Earlier
in his career he held various positions with the Wellcome
Foundation.
Bill Castell's previous not-for-profit roles include being a
council member of the UK Medical Research Council (2001-2004), and
Chair of the Prince's Trust (1998-2003). He is an Honorary Fellow
at Green Templeton College Oxford, an Honorary Fellow of the
University of Cardiff, an Honorary Fellow of King's College London
and an Honorary Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
