Today the Department of Transport’s hosted a maritime themed careers day with Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon, Department for Transport in partnership with charity Education and Employers who run free programme for schools Inspiring the Future.
Coordinating with International Shipping week, the themed day gave students from two Scarborough Primary Schools and one Secondary School, the chance to learn about an array of jobs in the transport and maritime sectors. The aim is to raise aspirations amongst young people by giving them an insight into different jobs available in the maritime sector.

Overdale Community Primary School – Lord Ahmad addressed the whole school in an assembly and gave a brief overview of his job. Children asked the Minister questions about his job.
St Augustine’s Catholic School – careers speed networking with Inspiring the Future volunteers and the school pupils.
Newby and Scalby Primary School – Lord Ahmad and volunteers talked to 60 children about their jobs and help them make links between their lessons and their futures.

Transport Minister, Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, said: “Transport and maritime are exciting, innovative industries that offer schoolchildren a world of opportunities when they are considering their future careers. As someone who works in transport, I can tell you it is a brilliant experience and the Government is doing its bit by investing in infrastructure that will create jobs and apprenticeships in every part of the country.”
Vicki Logan, Headteacher at Overdale Community Primary School, said: “The children of Overdale Primary School are excited by the prospect of a visit from Lord Ahmad, they have worked hard to agree questions for the minister and they are keen to hear him speak about his work. All classes value the opportunity to share their own learning about the Maritime Topic with the Minister. To achieve this, the children will share class displays about Maritime history including: art work, poetry and drama as he tours the school. A Power Point Presentation by the oldest children will be delivered in a short assembly for the Minister. To conclude the visit the whole school will sing shanty songs that tell stories of Maritime history.
Secondary headteacher Mark Taylor, said: “St Augustine’s School are looking forward to welcoming Lord Ahmad and a number of employees and employers from the Maritime Industry. The speed networking session will be a fantastic addition to the various CEIAG activities that happen throughout the school each year. Our Year 10 students have been prepped and are raring to go.”
